How does Hospice Work

Our Hospice program provides medical care and emotional support for patients and their families coping with a terminal illness. The focus is on quality of life. Care is provided in the patient’s home, however HomeCare & Hospice has contracts with several area nursing homes where hospice care may be provided. In addition, area hospitals have special hospice rooms for patients who need inpatient symptom control or respite care.

What services does Hospice provide?

  • Hospice medical director overseeing all
    care.
  • Skilled nursing as needed.
  • Expert pain and symptom control.
  • Medical equipment, medicine and supplies related to the life-limiting
    condition.
  • Hospice aide/personal care.
  • Spiritual and emotional support.
  • Trained volunteers upon request.
  • A registered nurse available 24 hours a day to take your call.
  • Bereavement counseling up to a year
    after your loved one has passed.

Who qualifies for Hospice care?

Admission to hospice requires a physician’s certification indicating that this patient is terminally ill with a life expectancy of six months or less if the terminal illness runs its normal course. Hospice care for
people with cancer, advanced illnesses such as end-stage cardiac, lung, neurological diseases or disease.

How is Hospice paid for?

The cost of Hospice care is covered by Medicare, Medicaid and most private insurance companies.

Community support is also vital for Hospice. This support helps fund areas of care and expenses that are not covered by other funding sources.

What services are provided through home care?

Our nurses provide skilled care such as assessment and teaching, medication administration, IV therapy, injections, wound care and catheterization.

Home care aides can provide a wide array of care, such as help with bathing, grooming, toileting, walking, meal preparation, feeding, housekeeping, laundry and errands. Care is available depending on the patient’s needs.

Who will be taking care of me?

All employees are thoroughly screened, specially trained and are supervised by a registered nurse.

How is home care paid for?

Depending on an individual patient’s eligibility, home care is paid for by Medicaid, group/private insurance or veterans’ benefits. Some people choose to pay for services themselves.

If I am the caregiver for my loved one, is respite care offered?

Respite care is offered to care for loved ones, allowing caregivers to take a temporary break from their
responsibilities.

Where are home care services offered?

Our licensed home care program provides a wide variety of in-home care in Allegany, Cattaraugus, Genesee and Wyoming counties.
